Vanvåg Beer – Mörker Schwarzbier (4.4% ABV) #Schwarzbier

Welcome back beer lovers.

Today a Scandinavian beer born in the Stockholm creative district of Södermalm. It is produced by a self-confessed ‘artisan’ brewer that likes to re-invent and re-purpose traditional beers both old and new. This one is a Schwarzbier, a traditional German black lager and a style almost as old as brewing itself.

Yeah, is sounds a touch too hipster for us Yorkshire folk but is it decent beer.

  5. Aroma : Malty with a touch of caramel and hints of coffee

  7. Body : Full bodied and well carbonated, with good head retention
  8. Taste : Rich roasted malt with a touch of sweetness. Strong malty aftertaste with a little coffee

Not a style we come across too often in the UK and not one that deserves to be ‘mucked about with.’ That said, here they have produced an excellent beer, one in which the roasted malts shine through and complement the more subtle chocolate and coffee flavours. A nice balance between sweet and bitter as been achieved, making this a rather pleasant easy drinker.

Strength wise it is towards the lower end of the scale at 4.4% as opposed to the more usual 5%. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing and with a good body it doesn’t appear weedy like some session beers. One to keep an eye open for if you like a bit of variety.

Our overall rating: 3.7/ 5.0
