Welcome back beer lovers. Today we have a review with a continental flavour, a collaboration between Yorkshire and Italy and a reference to a much loved movie of the 1960s.
The original Italian Job is a great movie, but how will this collaboration beer fare? Would Mr. Bridger approve? Would Charlie Coker think it great idea?
It is a pale ale but with black pepper and lemongrass added to the brew. As someone who is not a big fan of lemongrass in meals, I have some concerns, but as they say nothing ventured…

- Name : The Italian Job Lemongrass & Black Pepper Pale Ale
- Brewery: Roosters Brewing Co, Harrogate
- Hops : Not specified
- Grain : Malted barley and wheat
- Aroma : Citrus, a little floral but also a touch of spice
- Appearance : Amber with a slight haze and a white head. There were some black bits floating in suspension which I assume were black pepper.
- Body : Full bodied, medium carbonated with some head retention
- Taste : Delicate citrus fruit to begin, followed by malt but not sweet. Has the merest touch of spice to the moderately bitter finish. The pepper comes over in the aftertaste
- Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted and vegan friendly
What a big surprise this moreish pale ale turned out to be. Rather than any part being overpowering, it is beautifully balanced beer that is dangerously drinkable. It manages to combine the different flavours so well, some delicate, others like the pepper more robust, and become deceptively subtle. This is the sort of beer that doesn’t assail you at first sip, the more you drink the more you detect.
Despite my early misgivings this was a triumph, so approach each new beer with an open mind.
