St Austell – Korev (4.8% ABV)

Hello Beer lovers, and welcome back to another review here at TEH.

I’m pretty certain that anyone reading this review will be familiar with the famous Cornish brewery St Austell, and many of us will have no doubt sampled their most famous brews, Proper Job & Tribute. Well, in this review I will be looking at the bottled version of St Austell’s lager named Korev that is available in both cans and bottles in a lot of the major supermarkets.

Here’s hoping that this is one that can stand out amongst the glut of mainstream lagers that are swallowing up shelf space.

1. Name : Korev

2. Brewery: St Austell Brewery (Cornwall, England)

3. Hops :  Not stated

4. Grain :  Barley & Maize

5. Aroma : Nose is clean with quite a citrus hit backed by a malty edge at the back end

6. Appearance : Pours a light straw colour with a two finger white head and steady levels of carbonation

7. Body : Light to medium body with a pleasant mouthfeel

8. Taste : Whoa, this caught me by surprise as it has a very strong citrus presence that totally dominates proceedings. The malty backbone is there to add some balance but the sharp, zesty citrus bitterness just throws this one off balance for my personal palate.

In terms of mainstream lagers the price point of Korev puts it into the premium category out of those that are readily available, sadly the taste does not quite reflect this. Whilst there is nothing really wrong with Korev (it was certainly refreshing) the strong citrus notes in the taste just sends this into too much of an unwelcome direction for my personal taste and although brave to try something new it sadly does not warrant being a regular purchase for me.

The bottled version was included in the 3 bottles for £6 in the lager section of Tesco when I picked this up (multipack cans worked out cheaper), and I’m sure that there will be lot of fans, but if I am fancying a lager I think that I will probably look elsewhere on the shelves at the continental selection as you could pick up something of a higher quality for the same price.
