Wilde Child Brewing – The Magic Flute Vienna Lager (4.8% ABV) #ViennaLager

Welcome back lovers of great beer.

Vienna Lager is one of my favourite lagers and one often overlooked by UK brewers, so I was pleased to see this one on the Wilde Child website. It’s their first attempt at brewing one so it certainly promises to be interesting.

They’ve drawn inspiration from the world of opera for the name, The Magic Flute being composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, perhaps the most iconic citizen.

  1. Name : The Magic Flute
  2. Brewery: Wilde Child Brewing Co, Leeds
  3. Hops : Not stated
  4. Grain : Malted barley (Vienna malt)
  5. Aroma : Sweet and biscuity with a hint of yeast in the background
  6. Appearance : Pale gold with a slight haze and a brief white head
  7. Body : Medium bodied, medium carbonated with a little head retention
  8. Taste : Malt to the fore with some sweetness but not excessively so. Then a touch of doughy pastry or biscuit flavour. There is a dryness to the finish but the flavour fades quickly
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted, unfined and unfiltered

The first thing I note on pouring is the colour, which is a light gold rather than the darker hue which is more traditional for this style or beer.

The malt flavours are good and it has the bready, biscuit edge you would expect. It’s not as bitter as some may like but the finish is crisp and dry.

A pleasant easy drinking lager and an excellent first attempt. Certainly one I will order again.
