Fierce Beer X Otherworld Brewing – Sugi (4% ABV)

When I collected my latest beers for review, one in particular stood out as sounding like a very interesting and complex brew. This beer is a collaboration between Fierce Beer and Otherworld Brewing called Sugi which is a Japanese rice lager with cedar wood spirals……told you it sounded interesting and complex!

1. Name : Sugi

2. Brewery: Fierce Beer X Otherworld Brewing (Brewed and canned in Aberdeen, Scotland)

3. Hops :  Not specified

4. Grain :  Barley, Rice and Cedar wood spirals

5. Aroma :  Has a crisp, slightly zesty aroma with a malty edge. Subtle notes of the cedar wood is present on the nose

6. Appearance : Pours a very light golden colour with a one finger fluffy white head and fast moving carbonation

7. Body : Light body with a crisp mouthfeel

8. Taste :  Starts out with a clean crisp hit on the tongue before a zestiness creeps in followed by a touch of peppery spice from the cedar wood. As all three aspects bounce around the palate you are left with a pleasant, refreshing, lingering bitterness.

I started this review by suggesting that Sugi sounds interesting and complex, it certainly is! There is so much going on in this beer that sends your tastebuds into overdrive. Each mouthful sees you detecting something different which shows evidence that this has been cleverly brewed.

Sugi certainly is a refreshing beer that offers a very different aspect to many other lagers and that is certainly very welcome. Overall, I certainly enjoyed what was in my glass and would happily drink this again, however it probably wouldn’t beer that I could session on.

Our overall rating: 3.6/ 5.0
