Abbeydale Brewery – Sheffield Stout (4.5% ABV) #Stout

Welcome back beer lovers.

The label states ‘A classic stout inspired by our heritage, our location and the history of the city we call home.’ So, in true Yorkshireman’s terms a no-nonsense beer for no nonsense Yorkshire folk… Sounds just my thing.

Not had many Abbeydale beers in cans, but their cask beers are usually very good, so I have I hopes for this one.

  3. Hops : Not specified
  4. Grain : Barley and wheat
  5. Aroma : Some roasty malt but overall not a strong aroma
  6. Appearance : Not exactly black, more a very dark chestnut, fairly clear with just a little sediment at end of he can. Produced a foamy cream coloured head
  7. Body : Full bodied, medium carbonated with some head retention
  8. Taste : Initially quite malty, but not so much roast or smoke and quite dry bitter finish for a Stout. The aftertaste is rich and malty
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted and vegan friendly

What determines whether a beer is a porter or a stout? If I have been drinking this blind, without reference to the can, I would have said it is a rather nice porter. Either way it doesn’t really matter, I certainly enjoyed it.

As expected, a pleasant, no-nonsense, easy drinking beer, but there is some complexity in the malty aftertaste. I failed to detect the chocolate notes but there was some warm spice there. Not one to over chill and one I would certainly drink again, especially I find it on cask.
