Welcome back beer lovers.
The label states ‘A classic stout inspired by our heritage, our location and the history of the city we call home.’ So, in true Yorkshireman’s terms a no-nonsense beer for no nonsense Yorkshire folk… Sounds just my thing.
Not had many Abbeydale beers in cans, but their cask beers are usually very good, so I have I hopes for this one.

- Name : Sheffield Stout
- Brewery: Abbeydale Brewery, Sheffield
- Hops : Not specified
- Grain : Barley and wheat
- Aroma : Some roasty malt but overall not a strong aroma
- Appearance : Not exactly black, more a very dark chestnut, fairly clear with just a little sediment at end of he can. Produced a foamy cream coloured head
- Body : Full bodied, medium carbonated with some head retention
- Taste : Initially quite malty, but not so much roast or smoke and quite dry bitter finish for a Stout. The aftertaste is rich and malty
- Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted and vegan friendly
What determines whether a beer is a porter or a stout? If I have been drinking this blind, without reference to the can, I would have said it is a rather nice porter. Either way it doesn’t really matter, I certainly enjoyed it.
As expected, a pleasant, no-nonsense, easy drinking beer, but there is some complexity in the malty aftertaste. I failed to detect the chocolate notes but there was some warm spice there. Not one to over chill and one I would certainly drink again, especially I find it on cask.
