Wilde Childe Brewing Co – Excessive Behaviour Salted Caramel Stout (4.7% ABV)

Welcome back lovers of great beer.

Here at Hoptimist Towers we do enjoy a stout (or three) and a true milk stout (with lactose) even more so. Then there is caramel, who doesn’t like that, so I think I am going to enjoy this…but wait salted caramel? Salt and beer are not really good bed fellows are they. A quick look at the ingredients shows no mention of salt, so what is going on? Fear not your intrepid taster will try to find out.

  1. Name : Excessive Behaviour
  2. Brewery: Wilde Child Brewing co, Leeds
  3. Hops : Not stated
  4. Grain : Malted Barley and oats
  5. Aroma : Some roasted malt and a touch of caramel
  6. Appearance : Black with a cafe au lait coloured head
  7. Body : Medium bodied, medium carbonated, with some head retention
  8. Taste : Rich and toasty malt to the fore, followed by a little caramel and a touch of creamy vanilla. Some treacle toffee in the aftertaste
  9. Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted, unfined and unfiltered

Oh, this is rather nice, it’s got the roasted malt flavour and is not too sweet. The caramel flavour comes through well and tempered by the creaminess of the lactose. Not sure about the salted part but it did resemble the kind of caramel or toffee that they use in pâtisserie, so it hits the intended target.

Its easy drinking and dangerously moreish, but the ABV means you can indulge yourself. I certainly had more than one can and found the flavours shone through better when served cool rather than chilled.

Our overall rating: 3.8/ 5.0
