Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,
As Peter reviewed Magic Rock Brew Co’s Cloudy Lemonade IPA yesterday, it only seemed fitting that we have Mark review Thornbridge’s, Pink Lemonade Sour today! Take it away Mark!
According to the description on the can Allott is inspired by the love and labour put into allotments around the country and is named after the creator of pink lemonade. This is a nice back story that sets up the experience of drinking the beer rather nicely. Not to put a dampener on proceedings however in September 2022 Thornbridge revealed that this beer is officially coming out of their range and will soon be gone for good….. A mistake or a wise decision?

1. Name: Allott
2. Brewery: Thornbridge, Bakewell
3. Hops: Not specified
4. Grain: Barley & wheat
5. Aroma: Light tartness with soft ripe fruit aroma
6. Appearance: Cloudy, light pink with slight orange hue. 1 finger dissipating white head
7. Body: Light to medium body with a nice, easy drinking mouthfeel
8. Taste: Nice tartness with a sweet, punchy ,fruity zestiness
To me this is a beer that would prove to be a great introduction to the sour style for those looking to try something new as it has a pleasant tartness rather than a full on face curling intense sharpness. This most certainly should not put off sour beer fans, far from it, as it is an incredibly easy drinking, pleasant refreshing beer which would be perfect for the warmer months in particular.
Over time Thornbridge has removed several beers from their range only to re-brew them as specials in later years and I hope that this is not the last that we see of Allott and it does indeed make a comeback in time to come. In fact, I think this would be a great seasonal beer if they could incorporate it into their annual brewing schedule.
A very enjoyable beer that will be missed!
Our overall rating: 3.8/ 5.0
