Fierce – Have a break (6.5% ABV)

Hello, and welcome back to the Eternal Hoptimists,

You could be forgiven into thinking that Have a break from Fierce Beer is a stout or porter. For a start the black can and flavour profile of choc wafer epitomises what you would normally find in a dark beer, however, It is only when you read the further text on the beer that in fact this is a choc wafer pale ale. Sounds bonkers but it certainly sparked my interest, So, let’s see what it’s like.

 Name: Have A Break

2. Brewery: Fierce Beer, Aberdeen, Scotland

3. Hops:  Not specified

4. Grain:  Barley, Wheat & Oats

5. Aroma: Slight tartness on the nose with very little of the chocolate wafer aroma present

6. Appearance: Cloudy orange/amber. Little head retention but lots of sediment in the glass

7. Body: Medium body

8. Taste:  Starts with an almost tarte red fruit flavour before the malty backbone and light chocolate wafer flavours kick in leading to a fairly pleasant finish.

I’ll be very honest here and say that this is an incredibly weird beer. That is not to say that it is bad, more a case of a shock to the senses, but it does kind of work!

My first couple of tastes had me almost going what the…… is this? as the tarte red fruit flavours were a real unexpected shock to the pallet but as this flavour moved aside the subtle chocolate wafer (Kit Kat) flavours kicked in and I’ll be honest, this made me smile whilst shaking my head somewhat in disbelief at what was going on.

This is far from the most appealing beer visually particularly as the massive amount of sediment that sinks to the bottom of the glass looks not particularly great. However as I got towards the bottom of the glass and towards the aforementioned sediment I found that the chocolate wafer flavours became more pronounced.

I am glad that I got to experience Have a Break as it certainly proved to be something pretty unique and although it does kind of work I am not sure that this be one that I will look to pick up in the future.
