T|E|H On Tour – Edinburgh 2023 – Innis & Gunns (Leith)

Hello there fellow beer lovers,

As promised, I have deciphered the hieroglyphics left by myself and Stuart, and we are now ready to tell you about our experience at Innis & Gunns, Leith.

First up as you would have guessed we went to the Tap room in Leith rather than central Edinburgh, this was originally because it was closer to our other brewery targets, but it also worked out to be a little quieter which meant getting served was easy as was procuring a table to write reviews on!

Personally I think this was the best call as I also preferred the surroundings as a whole as it was closet to the river, and if you are interested in architecture or photography its a great area to take a look around.

The Brewery tap is located on the Shore, which is one of the main thoroughfares along the river which is packed with bars and restaurants.

Right, now you know where it is, lets get down to the liquid bread!

Innis & Gunn – Gunpowder , IPA – 5.6% ABV

Appearance: Clear Chestnut/Amber with a tight white head.
Scent: Sweet honeyed wheat with a hoppy bite that doesn’t linger.
Body: Medium bodied, okay carbonation with good head retention.
Taste: Very clean taste of wheat with a flourish of unexpected citrus notes despite its dry finish.

Stu’s Thoughts: “Cracking cheeky lunchtime half in the summer, it has real beer garden attitude, with a little surprise. it would also keep you in the father -in-laws good graces, so one to keep an eye out for”

Stuarts Rating: 3.8 / 5.0

Innis & Gunn – Gold Dust, Zero Carb Gluten Free – 4% ABV

Appearance: Clear golden colour, biggest shocking white head when poured but quickly retreated.
Scent: Smells slightly woody, possibly oaked with a lashing of lime.
Body: Thin bodied, okay carbonation but poor head retention.
Taste: initial clean hop which quickly morphed to a hollow, limp toast which petered out to nothing at the finish.

Sam’s Thoughts: “This one was the cheapest beer on the taproom menu, cheap doesn’t always equal cheerful. This one didn’t float my boat at all but I can see the appeal of having a pint with a curry or something spiced and punchy as it wouldn’t ruin the flavour of the meal.”

Sam’s Rating: 2.6 / 5.0

Innis & Gunn – Mangoes on the run – IPA – 5% ABV

Appearance: Hazed Manuka Honey meets Irn BRU, almost Marmalade like with a tight white head.
Scent: Sweet and Jammy, with an underlying beer-iness
Body: Medium to full bodied, good carbonation with great head retention.
Taste: Very Mango Forward, with a catch of dry wheat giving it an artisanal twist, very moreish indeed.

Stuarts Thoughts: “Now this, this is a summertime evening drink, cracking pint, moreish and excellently sweet.

Stuarts Rating: 3.9/5.0

Innis & Gunn – The Caribbean Rum Cask, BA red Ale – 6.8% ABV

Appearance: Dark with a reddish tinge at the edges with a off-white head.
Scent: a smoked oak punch, with a warming undertone of rising sweet rummy notes.
Body: Medium to full bodied, well carbonated, with cracking head retention.
Taste: The first mouthful is an explosion of deep smoked woody flavours, which seems to creep upward towards your lungs giving you a warm hug, as the sweetness of the rum comes through warming your belly its sweetness a complete contrast to the smokiness.

Sam’s Thoughts: “Now this is more like it!, this has definitely been created by someone who knows there stuff. This highlight of our trip thus far! Deep, woody and with plenty of fizz!

Stuart’s one comment: “…Wow..”

Sam’s Rating: 4.6/5.0

Not content with just trying the booze, they had a good go at the food as well, I mean you have to have a stomach liner after all! All in all it was a cracking visit, well worth the effort, we will be by again next time were in the neighbourhood.
