Today we are visiting our German friends to review a bottle of Audgustiner-Brau Munchen’s Doppelbock named Maximator.
Doppelbock is a style of beer that I usually enjoy but really do not drink enough so when I came across this one it goes without saying that I had to pick up a bottle or two and I could not be selfish in keeping my thoughts about the beer to myself so why not share it with our readers.

1. Name : Maximator
2. Brewery: Augustiner-Brau Munchen (Munich, Germany)
3. Hops : Not specified
4. Grain : Barley, Malt & Yeast
5. Aroma : Very sweet malty aroma with notes of bread and dried fruits
6. Appearance : Pours chestnut brown/ruby in colour with a fluffy one finger tan coloured head.
7. Body : Full bodied with an almost sticky mouthfeel as the beer hits the palate.
8. Taste : Malt base is very evident on the taste with the dried fruits more subtle. Toasted bread and sweet caramel notes also present as the beer works its way around the mouth.
This is a beer not to be taken lightly and by this I am not just taking about its strength. It is pretty full bodied with a heavy malt base with a toasty yet sweet caramel backbone. Taking this all into account it proves to be a beer that is one to savour rather than one that can be drunk quickly.
Maximator certainly has a lot going on and is a beer that is well worth trying. I would say that this is a great winter warmer that is best enjoyed when sipped on a cold evening as it proves to be very rich and is one that is best enjoyed on it’s own rather than as part of a session.
I will admit that I enjoyed Maximator overall and the more I drank the more I seemed to enjoy, however I personally feel that there are many better beers available in the Doppelbock style. There is no doubt that Maximator will have legions of fans and whilst I fully appreciate everything that is going on it won’t prove to be one that will be at the top of my future Doppelbock shopping list.
Our overall rating: 3.4/ 5.0
