Hi there fellow beer lovers,
Welcome to Into The Mild!
where we shine a light on one of Britain’s most underrated beer styles. Milds might once have been known as the easy-going, lower ABV pints of the pub world, but these days the style is slowly evolving, with plenty now pushing into the strength range that would’ve seemed fairly standard back in the early ‘90s. Thankfully though, the heart of the style is still very much intact approachable, flavourful, and built for proper drinking rather than showing off.
This time around, Lee’s taking a look at Overhaul, a 3.7% Dark Ruby Mild from Jolly Sailor Brewery. A brewery that’s been quietly putting out some solid traditional styles, and this one certainly looks the part straight out of the glass.

Name: Overhaul, Dark Ruby Mild
- Brewery: Jolly Sailor
- Aroma : Mellow maltyness with smokey hints
- Appearance : Dark chestnut with a cream coloured head.
- Body : Full bodied with some carbonation, good head retention.
- Taste : Malty, smokey, hints of dark fruits, dry finish.
I found this one mild in terms of bitterness and with its low ABV, and reasonable carbonation, it makes this a good contender as a session able beer for drinking in the sunshine.
It lacked a little in punchiness but very passable for a mild.
Our overall rating: 3.2/ 5.0
