Fans of rugby league will appreciate that ‘The Robins’ is the nickname of Hull Kingston Rovers. At the end of May, Sam and I will be venturing down to London to see them take on the mighty Wigan. Tough opposition with a long and proud history, but we are the current cup holders. So, what better time to sample a beer called Barbarian Robin, before hoards of barbarian northerners descend upon the capital. With an ABV of 6.2% it is a true IPA and is brewed in Liverpool which is St Helens territory.

- Name : Barbarian Robin IPA
- Brewery: Azvex Brewing Co, Liverpool
- Hops : Not stated
- Grain : Barley, oats and wheat
- Aroma : Tropical fruit and a hint of pine resin
- Appearance : Dark gold, opaque with a cream-coloured head
- Body : Full bodied, medium carbonated with some head retention
- Taste : Tropical fruit to the fore, pineapple a little melon and some musky guava. The finish is dry and bitter, with the aftertaste having a touch of pine
- Dietary restrictions : Allergens highlighted
An IPA with plenty of body and an appropriate alcohol kick, which is just what we want.
It’s soft and fruity on the palate, avoiding some of the harshness of the US styles, but still delivers a decidedly bitter edge.
This is clearly unfiltered as there was a fair amount of sediment when pouring into a glass. This in no way reduced my enjoyment of a rather good IPA. A good beer to hopefully toast victory.
